Battlefield Tours to Bosnia
Few places have a stronger claim for being deemed the place the modern world began than Sarajevo.
On 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were assassinated in Sarajevo, starting a series of events which would lead to WW1 and Europe’s bloody 20th Century.
More recently, Sarajevo has been the site of Europe’s longest ever siege. Between 1992-1995, an army of Bosnian Serb militants and their Serb allies reigned death on the innocent civilians of Sarajevo. The City lives and breathes this history still, with many survivors on hand to attest to the remarkable courage and sacrifice of one of modern Europe’s darkest events.
And within a three hour drive of Sarajevo, there is the site of the worst European genocide since the end of the Second World War. Despite, ostensibly being under the protection of the United Nations, thousands of mostly muslim Bosnian men were led away to be shot and dumped in mass graves by Bosnian Serbs killers. Today the Srebrenica Memorial Centre pays stark testament to a genocidal event, the likes of which many thought we’d never see again after 1945.
